Presidential Homes
At Mountain Lumber Company™ we have built our reputation and the quality of our products on the history of our country. We have been proud to participate in the restoration projects of several Presidential homes. With each project, no matter the size of our involvement, we are able to provide materials that maintain the historical integrity of the project as well as our knowledge and expertise.
Montpelier
In December, 2003, the Montpelier Foundation began a five-year restoration project at Montpelier, the home of the nation's fourth President, James Madison. Known as the Father of the Constitution, Madison was the author of the Bill of Rights, and the chief architect of the American Republic. With restoration, the mansion will be returned in size, structure, form and furnishings to the home that James and Dolley Madison knew in the 1820s.
Mountain Lumber products were deemed the most historically accurate based on recovered archival building documents, include a drawing of proposed changes to Montpelier, circulated between James Madison and Thomas Jefferson.
Historic Heart Pine® reclaimed by Mountain Lumber is being used at Montpelier to reconstruct sections of windows and doorways, as structural support beams and as the key elements in the "Jefferson Roof" on the mansion's wings.
Mountain Lumber feels a deep connection to our country's third President, Thomas Jefferson. As an accomplished architect, Jefferson designed and built his renowned home, Monticello, which is now one of the most visited historic sites in America; his personal retreat, Poplar Forest; and the University of Virginia. We are honored to have contributed materials to his two homes:
Monticello In addition to the material for the exterior trimwork and design accents in the gift shop, we are looking forward to providing flooring for the world class Visitors Center which is currently under construction. Through 40 years of restoration work, the Monticello foundation maintains their commitment to Jefferson's architecture, and the new Visitors Center will be no exception.
Poplar Forest Jefferson's "Other Home" was one that he considered a private retreat. It was known as his most personal architectural creation and landscape, as well as a working plantation. We took this project as personally when called upon to provide the exterior and interior millwork, and flooring that replicates the original Heart Pine boards.
Mount Vernon
Home to America's First President, George Washington and First Lady Martha, Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America. Every detail is true to its original construction. Mountain Lumber provided an historic Heart Pine beam for construction of an authentic well based on the original architectural drawings.
Ash Lawn- Highland
Ash Lawn-Highland is an historic house museum, 535-acre working farm, and performing arts site in Albermarle County, Virginia, and former home to the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. Like all of historic restoration projects in which we have participated, this one also maintained the historical significance of every detail when procuring materials. We supplied wood for a storage structure located on the immaculately kept grounds.
